Souvenirs from Poland (Lousy T-Shirts)
Printed T-shirts and Steel Poles
Date: 1998

As you arrive in Warsaw airport there are signs everywhere in Hebrew, there is a small kosher store, and even the bars sell "kosher beer". Walking through the streets of Warsaw you can see carpenters carving out images of Hassidic Jews, Torahs in hand. But almost the only Jews left in Poland are tourists. This piece is the first in a series of works about the phenomenon of Holocaust Tourism, of the commodification of loss and the merchandising of grief.
